European Woad is the legendary blue plant dye from Europe and was prized by Napoleon to dye the uniforms for his army.  The plant (Isatis tinctoria)  is a member of the Brassica family and originated in Central Asia but is grown throughout Europe.  In many of the Western US States it is considered a noxious weed and may not be cultivated. Woad is the eponymous French Blue – a rich, soft shade with a touch of grey.  Our woad extract comes from the famous Bleu de Lectoure project founded by Henri and Denise Lambert and is very high quality pure woad pigment.
